It's October..Think Pink!

October, as many of you know, is Breast Cancer awareness month. I had the privilege of running in Nashville's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure this past Saturday. I ran in memory of my friend, Leslie Harvey, who passed away at the age of 31 this past February. Her parents were there, along with over 60 people, who signed up to be a part of her team "Remembering Leslie". Our team shirt won "Best of Show" in the t-shirt design category. It was bright lime green and featured a ton of butterflies (one of Leslie's favorites).

George and Kaye Harvey, parents of Leslie Harvey

An estimated 12,000 people crossed the finish line, not to mention the thousands more who stood and cheered everyone on in the race. One of the most touching moments of the morning for me is when a Scottish bagpipe player led a parade of breast cancer survivors through the crowd. As the survivors entered, the crowd continued to send up cheers and applause. Watching each survivor walk through (some with smiles, some with tears) was truly a moment for all of us in the crowd to witness.

Almost everyone reading this blog has probably been touched by breast cancer. For me, I've had friends diagnosed and my grandmother successfully battled it. You're Invited's previous owner, Kendall Womble, has battled breast cancer herself. She was recently featured in Real Simple magazine in an article titled "Portrait of Breast Cancer." She had a team at the race on Saturday, as well.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, I thought I'd put together some "Think Pink" party tips.

Think Pink Signature Drink

Sparkling Pink Punch-from Southern Living

Prep: 5 min., Chill: 1 hr. For a sweeter finish, substitute ginger ale for club soda.

Yield

Makes about 9 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 (12-oz.) can frozen pink lemonade concentrate, thawed
  • 4 cups white cranberry juice cocktail
  • 1 qt. club soda, chilled
  • Garnish: fresh mint sprigs

Preparation

1. Stir together lemonade concentrate and cranberry juice cocktail in a large pitcher. Cover and chill at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours. Stir in club soda just before serving. Garnish, if desired.

Champagne Punch: Substitute 1 (750-milliliter) bottle extra-dry Champagne or sparkling wine and 1/4 cup orange liqueur for club soda; proceed with recipe as directed.

Note: For testing purposes only, we used Cointreau for orange liqueur.

Think Pink Florals

Gerbera daisies are such a sweet and simple flower. As you can see in the picture from Project Wedding, they utilized the pink gerbera daisy both in a simple vase with a single stem, and as the place card holder. This simple idea would look adorable for a "Think Pink" brunch!

Think Pink Candy Buffet Bar

Pink Candy Bar-as seen on Elizabeth Anne Designs

I love this candy bar, especially all the fun pink and white candies. To do this at home, you'll need a fabulous tablecloth and an assortment of various glass containers. Mix and match the containers, using different heights and shapes, and fill with assorted candies. You can have this candy bar as a dessert table for the Think Pink Brunch, or you can have chinese takeout boxes in hot pink and use this table as a favor table for guests as they leave. Either way, who doesn't love candy!

This candy bowl below can be purchased from the Susan G. Komen shop. It would look great on your candy buffet as well.

Think Pink Cookies

As featured on Woman's Day, look at this adorable kit from King Arthur Flour. It includes all-natural vanilla sugar cookie mix, and everything you need to make pink ribbon cookies (the cookie cutter, white icing and pink food coloring). 10% of their sales go to support breast cancer research!

So, in this month of October, please don't forget to THINK PINK and support breast cancer research! Hopefully, with these Think Pink ideas, you can host a fabulous party in the process!

Best wishes-Stephanie

Happy Fall Y'all!

www.bhg.com

Fall is one of my favorite times of year! After enduring the Tennessee heat and humidity throughout the summer, I'm ready for the cool days of fall. I love the leaves changing, having friends over on Saturday for bonfires and chili, and I love pulling out sweaters and sweatshirts. Don't get me wrong, I love summertime and flip flops and warm weather, but there's something special about the season of fall.

Halloween, one of my favorite holidays, is around the corner! I can't wait to decorate, get my children's costumes ready and prepare for some Halloween fun.

Here are some pictures of some favors I did for a Halloween party. I bought them at the Target $1 bin, added the children's names and some candy and made favor containers out of them.

The girls received the tins with the black feather boa embellishments and the boys received the felt containers shaped like ghosts and pumpkins. I added tags to the felt containers with each boy's name on them.

Here are some treats I made for the children. The first picture shows the setup of the "cemetery." I took a silver platter, cut styrofoam to fit and covered the styrofoam with crushed up Oreos. The Oreos give the appearance of dirt. I then placed a Halloween tree covered in spider webs on top of the styrofoam. I added little tombstones, pumpkins and plastic spiders to fill in the cemetery.
The picture below shows the cemetery once I added the Mummy Dogs.
The Mummy Dogs are super easy to make and the kids
love them.

Here's the recipe from www.pillsbury.com

INGREDIENTS
1can (8 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® Crescent Recipe Creations™ refrigerated flaky dough sheet
2 1/2slices American cheese, quartered (2.5 oz)
10large hot dogs
Cooking spray
Mustard or ketchup, if desired
DIRECTIONS
1.Heat oven to 375°F.
2.If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough; separate at perforations, creating 4 rectangles. Press perforations to seal. If using dough sheet: Unroll dough; cut into 4 rectangles.
3.With knife or kitchen scissors, cut each rectangle lengthwise into 10 pieces, making a total of 40 pieces of dough. Slice cheese slices into quarters (1/2 slice cheese, cut in half).
4.Wrap 4 pieces of dough around each hot dog and 1/4 slice of cheese to look like "bandages," stretching dough slightly to completely cover hot dog. About 1/2 inch from one end of each hot dog, separate "bandages" so hot dog shows through for "face." On ungreased large cookie sheet, place wrapped hot dogs (cheese side down); spray dough lightly with cooking spray.
5.Bake 13 to 17 minutes or until dough is light golden brown and hot dogs are hot. With mustard, draw features on "face."

Below is another take on the mummy dog!
For drinks, don't forget to make some yummy Hot Apple Cider and Witch's Brew.
For my apple cider, I take a jug of Apple Cider (you can find some great seasonal ones in the produce section of the grocery store). I pour the entire jug into a large Dutch oven and simmer on low on my stovetop. I add an entire bag of Red Hot candies and slowly stir with a wooden spoon, until the candies melt and the cider is a nice deep red color. It is not only a delicious fall drink, but it makes your entire home smell wonderful.

For this Witch's brew, I bought a large black couldron and placed a large punch bowl in the cauldron. I filled the punchbowl with the Witch's Brew and then poured dry ice between the 2 vessels. You can see the effect it makes! The kids were mesmerized by this!

I found this Witch's Brew recipe from Sandra Lee, Semi-Homemade, Food Network.

Ingredients

  • 1 (6-ounce) package lime gelatin
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 3 cups chilled pineapple juice
  • 1 (2 liter) bottle chilled lemon-lime soft drink or ginger ale
  • 2 cups chilled vodka, optional

Special equipment:

  • 1 large black plastic cauldron (available at party or craft stores)
  • 1 punch bowl that fits inside the cauldron
  • 1 plastic hand (available at party supply stores), sterilized in hot water
  • 1 block dry ice (available at supermarkets, ice cream shops or ice companies)

Directions

Pour the gelatin mix into a large bowl. Slowly stir in the boiling water. Stir at least 2 minutes, until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Stir in the pineapple juice. Let cool to room temperature.

Wearing heavy duty gloves or using tongs, place the block of dry ice in the bottom of the cauldron. (Dry ice will burn skin, so handle it with gloves and tongs and keep it away from kids and pets!)

Use an ice pick to break the block into smaller chunks, if necessary.

Fill the cauldron with just enough water to cover the dry ice. It will begin to "steam."

Place the punch bowl inside the cauldron, on top of the dry ice. The cauldron will appear to be magically smoking.

Entrap the sterilized rubber hand between the cauldron and the punch bowl, squeezing it tight so the hand appears to be reaching out of the mist for help. Hot-glue the hand to the cauldron, if necessary, to hold it in place.

Carefully pour the drink mixture into the punch bowl. Slowly add the chilled vodka and lemon-lime soda or ginger ale. Stir gently to mix.

To finish everything off, I took refrigerated sugar cookie dough and rolled it out into fun Halloween shapes.

Since I'm such a fan of fall, I am always on the look out for decorations that can be used in October for Halloween, but are still appropriate for November and Thanksgiving.
Check out this "green" centerpiece on www.bhg.com
It's a cylindrical vase, filled with branches from your own yard and miniature pumpkins hanging on floral wire! How beautifully simple is this!

I had to sign off my post with this picture! It really made me laugh, and I'm pretty sure would be the hit of any "candy bar" at your Halloween party.

I thought it would be fun to showcase some of the brides' favorite pieces from our booth at the FBB. This china from Pickard was our most popular wedding registry item at the booth. Franklin Bridal Ball 2009

Well, we just finished the 2009 Franklin Bridal Ball at the Factory at Franklin, and Anna and I had a fabulous time! We definitely tried to incorporate our signature Hot Pink and Green in the booth.

So, to get ready for the FBB we enlisted the help of some wonderfully talented people! Who knew that our husbands were so great at tying bows and stuffing gift bags. You'll have to check out my adorable daughter too, as she was so proud to be my helper as I prepared the floral arrangements in my kitchen!

Add Image

Here are some more pictures of our booth. Thanks to all the brides (and grooms, and mothers and friends) who stopped by to see us. We met some super sweet people, and we had a lot of fun getting ready for the event. By the way, for those that stopped and asked, "YES we do make custom pom poms in your choice of colors."

You're Invited Events Launches!

I am so excited to launch You’re Invited Events with my business partner and friend, Anna Peebles, owner of You’re Invited Gifts and Paper. I have been planning events since graduating college in 1999, on a part-time basis through word of mouth. Over the summer, I decided to partner with Anna and pursue event planning full-time. Event planning and everything it entails is a huge passion of mine. From a very early age, I have had a love for cooking, baking, entertaining and orchestrating events. I “wrote” my first cookbook in the 3rd grade (mainly by using my mom’s cookbooks to photocopy recipes at my dad’s store). I still remember the green construction paper cover and the photocopied pages I gave to my class!

Planning parties and events flourished out of my love for cooking and entertaining. I love working with clients to take an event from start to finish and all the fun details in between. I cannot wait to share party tips and pictures of events with my readers through this blog.

*By the way, come visit Anna and I at the Franklin Bridal Ball this Thursday night, September 24, 2009.

You’re Invited Events is a full-service event planning company serving all of Tennessee, and available for travel. Whether it’s an intimate dinner party for 6 or a wedding for 500, You’re Invited can orchestrate the entire event. We’ll help create your vision and make it a reality. You’re Invited Events creates magical moments and memorable events.
